South African miner Gold Fields has stopped heap leach operations at its 90%-owned Tarkwa gold mine in SW Ghana after the nation’s Environmental Protection Agency prohibited the discharge of water.
The Tarkwa mine produced 717,000oz of gold in 2011, of which 199,000oz was heap-leached and 518,000oz came from the carbon-in-leach plant. The CIL plant is not affected.
Although the heap leach has been suspended since July 16, Gold Fields says there has been no material impact on production to date.
South African-based Gold Fields Ltd will secure 100% of the Talas gold-copper-molybdenum project in the Kyrgyz Republic after joint venture partner Orsu Metals opted to focus on development of the Karchiga copper project in Kazakhstan.
Gold Fields will pay $UD10M for Orsu’s 40% interest in the Talas project, and take a $C10M placement of 25M units at 40c plus 12.5M free warrants. It will emerge with a 14.31% shareholding in Orsu, rising to 18.32% if all warrants are exercised.
Ten days after the fire that killed five mine workers at the Kloof Driefontein Complex (KDC West) gold mine west of Johannesburg, South African miner Gold Fields has been permitted to reopen the complex apart from the Ya Rona Shaft, where proto rescue teams continue to fight the blaze.
Gold Fields says the first full shift went back down the mine for the Tuesday morning shift, a week after the KDC East complex was reopened.

The company says the KDC West complex will remain closed until further notice under a Section 54 Order issued by the Department of Mineral Resources.
Fire fighters are continuing to battle a blaze that killed five miners at Gold Fields’ KDC West Ya-Rona Shaft near Merafong in South Africa on Saturday night. The company says 11 employees are still in hospital, but are now being kept in for routine observation.
The fire fighters from the Mine Rescue Services have been working around the clock to bring the fire under control. No cause has yet been given for the fire.
A fire in Gold Fields’ 4 Shaft (Ya-Rona) KDC West gold mine near Merafong in South Africa has killed five miners. Another 14 people were admitted to hospital, although all are reported to be in stable condition.
The mine management has launched a full investigation into the fire, which broke out on Saturday night. Gold Fields, the world’s fourth largest gold producer, says the KDC mine has been closed until further notice and the Department of Mineral Resources and union representatives informed.
Gold One International and Gold Fields are looking at a combined operation to retreat the surface tailings from their mines in the West Rand region of South Africa’s Witwatersrand Basin to recover residual gold, uranium and sulphur.
Under a memorandum of understanding, the miners will investigate a joint venture to treat over 700Mt of ore – over 60% of the region’s total tailings. A detailed scoping study is due by the middle of 2012.
