Western Australia’s iron ore powerhouse in the Pilbara region has delivered three new contracts from major operators for construction, maintenance and industrial services engineer Monadelphous Group.
Hancock Prospecting subsidiary Atlas Iron has awarded an extension of the mining and crushing service works at its Mt Webber mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara region to contracting group NRW Holdings.
Through its Action Drill & Blast and Primero businesses, the contract extension worth about $A60M will cover load and haul, drill and blasting and ROM re-handling, crushing and screening expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

The Alberta provincial government has confirmed it will not permit coal-related exploration or commercial development on the Eastern Slopes of the Canadian Rockies, dashing the hopes of companies such as Atrum Resources for its flagship Elan hard coking coal, while it develops new land-use planning systems to protect the environment.
A plan by mining entrepreneurs Gina Rinehart and Chris Ellison to open new export routes for currently stranded iron ore assets in the Pilbara region will be a major beneficiary of the Western Australian government’s approval of a major expansion of the Port Hedland shipping infrastructure.
Port Hedland shipped 546Mt in cargoes in FY21, including 523Mt iron ore. Ports minister Rita Saffioti says the expansion will lift total capacity to 660Mtpa.
Mining and civil contractor MACA has further strengthened its position in Western Australia’s Pilbara region with the award of a new 12-month openpit mining services contract at Hancock Prospecting’s Roy Hill iron ore mine.
The contract, covering drill and blast, load and haul, is expected to generate about $A70M in revenue from its commencement in early 2022. It lifts MACA’s current work in hand position to $3B.
News of the Port Hedland port and rail agreement between Mineral Resources and Hancock Prospecting has been welcomed by Brockman Mining, Hong Kong-based owner of two significant Pilbara iron ore deposits currently stalled by the lack of logistics solutions.
Brockman’s 100%-owned Marillana and Ophthalmia projects are covered by a haulage and port access JV agreement with MRL.
