South African police are investigating an armed attack on Harmony Gold Mining’s Kalgold openpit mine early today that resulted in the fatal wounding of a reaction unit supervisor employed by a contracted security company.
Harmony said additional security measures at the mine prevented the attackers from getting away with any gold.
The mine 55km SW of Mahikeng in NW Province has been targeted previously, with 12kg of gold stolen in April 2018 in what a company spokesman called a brazen attack on its gold storage facility.

Thousands of South African gold mining employees or descendants of deceased miners will be in line for payouts of between R70,000 and R500,000 after the High Court in Johannesburg approved a R5B agreed settlement with five major mining companies.
