Go-it-alone Australian lithium developer Liontown Resources has awarded a full openpit mining services contract for the Kathleen’s Corner and Mt Mann deposits at its 100%-owned Kathleen Valley project in WA to Iron Mine Contracting.
The 3-year contract is valued at about $A240M for private contractor Iron Mine, which has been performing excavations, haul road constructions and pit dewatering at the two deposits since Jan 2023.
Lithium project developer Liontown Resources has again rebuffed a push by Albemarle, the world’s largest producer, to draw it into a consolidation that would strengthen its hold over the emerging West Australian resources.
Liontown, which is about 12 months away from first production at its Kathleen Valley project, has rejected Albemarle’s $A2.50 per share – valuing the company at $5.5B – just as it rejected previous earlier non-binding indicative proposals of $2.20 and $2.35.

Australian battery materials developer Liontown Resources has cleared the way for a final investment decision on its 100%-owned Kathleen Valley lithium project in WA with the signing of a foundational offtake agreement with global automaker Ford.
The binding agreement for up to 150,000dmt spodumene concentrate annually over an initial five years, is the project’s third after its deals in the last two months with Tesla and LG Energy Solution.

West Australian developer Liontown Resources has taken a major step towards development of its flagship Kathleen Valley lithium project by executing its first binding offtake term sheet with leading world battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution.
The 5-year deal, and 5-year option, with South Korean-based LGES for up to 150,000dmt spodumene concentrate represents about a third of Kathleen Valley’s start-up capacity of about 500,000tpa SC6.0, expected in the June 2024 qtr.
West Australian developer Liontown Resources has awarded a contract of about $10M to Metso Outotec for design, fabrication and delivery of a 5.5MW Premier SAG mill for its 100%-owned Kathleen Valley lithium mining and processing project, 50km NW of Leinster.
The mill will accommodate 2.5Mtpa base production and its planned expansion to 4Mtpa in Year 6.
