Days after announcing record sales figures, international diamond producer Lucapa has again shut down the Mothae kimberlite mine in Lesotho due to a 14-day national lockdown announced by prime minister Moeketsi Majoro following a surge in COVID-19 cases.
Lucapa says the decision to temporarily place the mine in care and maintenance amid security measures was taken after discussions with the Lesotho government, its 30% JV partner.
The mine was suspended for 7 months due to the prior pandemic lockdown last year. MD Stephen Wetherall says the current stoppage relates to operational health and safety, rather than wider market limitations, and Lucapa expects to resume mining and processing as soon as the lockdown ends.
