Norilsk Nickel has blamed gross violations of safety rules for the collapse of an ore reloading facility and the adjoining walkway during repairs at its concentrator at the Taimyr Peninsula in Russia’s Far North during structural repairs early on Feb 20.
The world’s No 1 nickel producer says the dead workers were employees of contractor Norilsknickelremont. Five other workers sustained injuries.
An official Russian Federation Investigative Committee has detained four senior officers of the project and contractor. The company has dismissed the general director of the Norilsk Concentrator.
The project continues operating at reduced capacity.
