For the first time in Australia, a specialist land and natural resources court has adopted climate change and human rights arguments to oppose a giant thermal coal mine development.
The Queensland Land Court recommends the state government deny a mining lease and environmental authority for the 40Mtpa Galilee mine proposed by mining entrepreneur Clive Palmer’s Waratah Coal.
The court’s decision may be challenged in the state Supreme Court.
